"Sorcerer's Apprentice Mode"

What does this phrase even mean?
the early 90s and this is the first time I've heard this phrase.

My first inclination was to say "Yes, the router went into Night on Bald
Mountain mode, encountering Chernabog" (Fantasia reference for anyone
old enough...).
