In Oakland, CA, it has been very sporadic.  At 7th & Broadway, there was 
good signal, but no data service.  At 10th-11th & Broadway, I had 4G and 
a middling signal (and I was actually able to do data stuff without 
wifi).  So I don't know if the problem here is only with the microcell 
towers (which tend to be more prevalent as you count down the "number" 
streets between 8th and the Estuary/waterfront) and not with the "big" 
towers, or if it's something even weirder.  Note also that I didn't try 
voice--only data.
