Follow-up to this, which I just found out about today:
First, this Wild Wacky Action Bike of sorts (note what site posted it
and hold that thought):

...which was later debunked -- turns out the NYT was doing maintenance
of some sort which broke stuff (brings into question why they were doing
this during peak morning hours):
