NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) --
A manhole fire sparked a power outage in downtown Newark, causing some
classes at Rutgers-Newark and NJIT to be canceled Thursday.

A cable failed in a manhole at University Place and Bleecker Street just
before 1:30 a.m., sparking the fire.

PSE&G crews are on the scene, according to the utility. It estimates power
will be restored Thursday afternoon.

Several businesses in downtown Newark were without power as workers tried
to restore service.

Along with Rutgers-Newark and NJIT, the outage is affecting St Michael's
Hospital and Prudential's downtown headquarters. PSE&G headquarters also
are currently without power.

St. Michael's is operating on generators and remains open.

Newark-Rutgers and NJIT both said some classes are canceled Thursday.
