[VoiceOps] Broadsoft/ACME and Solarwinds

Also more generally, MIBs define a data structure (ie what information is
available to you) not a monitoring schema. For the most part, you can never
just load a MIB and expect to get a bunch of nice labeled magic graphs that
show all the information you care about in a meaningful color-coded manner.
Sometimes the only benefit of loading a MIB is translating traps, whereas
for anything you want to poll, you can just enter the OID. A number of the
higher end commercial NMS products have "modules" or "plug-ins" for
different Vendors that do that, but that includes their polling and graph
definitions as well as the actual MIB.

I am/have been monitoring both BroadSoft (BroadWorks AS/NS/MS) and
AcmePacket units via SNMP in ZenOSS via SNMP for some time. I'd presume
there is some way to do the same in Solarwinds, but as Alex said it really
doesn't give an easy way to watch a custom OID from what I have seen. You
may want to look into Cacti if you only need to graph, or another NMS
package (I prefer ZenOSS, but there are a number of other open ones out
there) if you want graphing, alerting, and trap collection, etc.

Solarwinds in general is horrid and abysmal for third-party MIB
importation. My conclusion was: give up and use something else.
However, that was 2-3 years ago; maybe they have gotten their shit together
on that since ver. 7.
