[cisco-voip] PVDMs! What are they good for?

PVDM's are your dsp resources that are used for transcoding and
conference bridging. Depending on the hardware installed, you'll either
have PVDM or PVDMII modules. (PVDMII has twice the capacity)

Can anyone explain briefly what the PVDMs are used for on the routers?
Do I need these if I am going to be running T1s, FXOs and SRST or do I
need them just for conferencing?
