jitter?

4470 bytes is about 17ms of serialisation at 2mbits/s.

So if you want to do VoIP you might want to stick to 1500 bytes?

But in any case the real issue is what MTU the end devices send. If
your hosts are all connected to Ethernet LANs then you aren't likely to
see many packets over 1500 bytes ;-) (well, not unless you are
tunnelling or something - in which case you might see >1500 but <1600).

also you might need to think about buffer pool issues?
