Being a CCNA or CCNP was never a prerequisite for attaining your CCIE.
The CCNA/NP and CCIP lines are "stepping stones" towards various CCIE
tracks. But not requirements.
You may be thinking of the various Cisco Qualified Specialist
certifications (like Security, Content Networking, Cable, etc.), in
which case you are correct. They used to be CCNP specializations, but
have since been separated and CCNA is the only requirement.
CCIE Security is a hot track. Routing & Switching is good for
Enterprise networks. Communications & Services is good for service
provider networks.

I could be wrong.
Last time I checked to be a CCIE the only pre-req now is to be CCNA. NP
is
not a required thing.
I also heard that the 1 day format for the lab is a lot easier than the
2
day.. anyone care to comment on that?
Security is suppose to be the next hot thing. But it seems to be CSSIP
(is
that the right acronym?) is the hotter cert in the cert market for
security
than a ccie-security.
