% - Is there any way to alleviate this?

proper network design - also try ip route-cache same-interface,
this is likely to help considerably.

% - Is routing from one segment to another through an Ethernet interface a
% bad idea?

        yes.

% - Do we need to replace the 2601 with a more powerful router?

maybe depending on how much traffic you are moving - try ip
route-c same-int on the ethernet interface and let us know if it
        helps
