Beyond a certain point, you need to use the S-train boot images to make
them fit in 4MB bootflash. This is documented in the Cisco bulletins
and/or release notes.

There's really no pressing need to run the same release boot image as
your primary image, unless you're doing something really strange. There
may be some incompatibilities if you get too far apart in versions, but
worry about that only if it bites you.
