The problem is solved....
After I wiped the config away, I set the IP address on both sides and set
the cable length for 6 feet, made sure the cables were set correctly
(transmit to receive) and it worked great. No other configuration was
needed.

You must set the cable length to a value that accurately reflects the true
length of the cable. Otherwise, the pulse voltage is too high on the
receiver, which causes coding violations, among other things.
One side must also set the clock.
