Vinod,

An understanding of Cisco IOS, features are developed and released in
subtrains from the original
http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/620/roadmap.shtml refers to the software
roadmap and show (at a very high level) where all the code points converge
and diverge. You'll see from the map that many of the release trains with
new features will converge on the 12.2 major release. Cisco recommends a
major realease train and maintaince releases from that where ever possible.

To help you descide on on the correct IOS version we provide the
Hardware/Software comapatability tool
http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/front.x/Support/HWSWmatrix/hwswmatrix.cgi and
the feature navigator http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/FeatureNav/FN.pl
, and finally the Upgrade planner
http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Software/Iosplanner/Planner-tool/iosplanner.cgi
? .

If you have a direct support contract with us NSA (network supported
account) or higher then will can recommend the correct release for you.

Frank Bruce

Subject: [nsp] REG: Cisco IOS Software

Hi All,

Is there any method that Cisco provides to choose an appropriate IOS based
on the role the router plays. For example I have been trying to use a 2610
router for a customer multihoming to an upstream ISP. The customer is
running BGP with his provider, uses NAT, & CAR. And I started by using an
IOS that was quiet buggy. Now I have put him the 12.0.7 (T), & am observing
it. In an couple of months we would be replacing the customer router with a
7206 - VXR, & this is a stopgap arrangement. I am again worried on what IOS
I would need to choose fot the Cisco 7206-VXR.

Kindly advice me.

With warm regards,
Vinod.
