A bit more context would help, but if you're talking 7500 or 7200,
and have CEF turned on, you need to upgrade to a version where CEF
actually works. 12.0.14S is a good starting point, 12.1.5T otherwise.
Some versions of 11.1CC probably work too. 8-)
The kind of behavior you're describing is typical of CEF switching
bugs, turning on record-route make the traceroute bypass the fast
switching path and the bugs hide in the woodwork.
Note that the problem isn't neccessarily on the router you're
pinging from, it could be on the target router.
