Our shop is rolling out two 7140-2T3 routers to sit at either end of a
point-to-point DS3.
These units have the loudest power supplies we've ever seen on Cisco
equipment. The two routers together put out more sound and vibration than
the dual PSUs on a 6509 chassis switch. The vibration is consistent with
what one would feel if a rotating component is off-balance.
We've arranged for SmartNet replacement of these PSUs (Cisco sent us two
AS5300 PSUs this morning so we're still waiting), but as the behavior is
identical between both routers I'm really not anticipating that the
replacement parts will be any better.
My question is this: How can Cisco justify such shoddy
engineering/construction on a mid-range device like this? This is not
consumer-grade equipment, and as such I expect service-provider grade
construction. Something that rattles the racks when mounted does not seem
acceptable to me.
As mentioned above, this is the first piece of Cisco gear we've had such a
problem with. Is this part of a trend anyone working with newer Cisco kit
has seen?
