Giving Boatanchors a Bath

Would someone please tell me about the "Do's" and "Don't's" of giving
boatanchors a bath to clean off the dirt and grime before you start a
restoration.

I've heard that a mixture of half Windex and half water with a soft brush in
the bathtub is a good method.  You then rinse the radio with lots of water
and dry it out with a hair dryer.  I've even heard of people immersing them
completely in a bath of soapy water!

What's the best way to do a complete cleaning of years of accumulated dirt?
