collins PTOs

Has anyone here had experience with changing the range of a Collins PTO by
adding capacitance across the tank circuit inside it?

The reason I ask, is I'm planning a 160-meter rig, and can easily obtain an
old R390A pto, which tunes 2455-3455 kc with an internal capacitance of 390
pF.
If my calculations are correct, this means the coil covers the range of
5.3-10.6 uH, and with 1100 pF of capacity total, this coil would tune
1452-2300 kc (approx).

Trying to find a PTO that covers 160 meters directly has proven to be pretty
fruitless, and I would like something more stable than an old BC221.
