LSB/USB vs bands vs CE-100V

The reason that the 75 meter band uses LSB and the 14 and up bands use USB
is a holdover from an esrly design in QST that used a 9 MHz IF and a BC-458
VFO running around 5 MHz.  In those days the 7 MHz band did not have a phone
allocation and the 21 MHz band did not exist.  28 MHz was too high for VFO
control while still meeting SSB stability criteria.  So the only two bands
of interest to early SSB experimenters were 75 and 20 meters.

The 9 MHz IF SSB generator was set to provide a USB output.  When mixed with
5 MHz, the 4 MHz difference product turned out to be LSB.  The sum product
at 14 MHz turned out to be USB.  That convention stuck over the years but
today is totally arbitrary.
