Help(!) - what is this resistor's value??

Got an old-style resistor to replace, but the good folks at Lafayette never
wrote its value on the schematic.

It is dark red, overall, and sortof bulbous at both ends.
One end has purple painted all over it, near the lead, and the only other
marks are three dots on the body of the resistor: black, black, blue.

Can anyone suggest the value on this thing?  It is about a 1/4 inch thick,
and about 3/8-1/2" long, if that makes any difference.
