Steve,
I have 2 S-85's - this was the receiver I had as
a Novice back in 1974. Not a great rig. Single
conversion, no crystal filter, no product detector.
Decent to casually listen on SW bands, but hardly
a 'serious' receiver. I have a fondness for them,
but only from a Nostalgia perspective.
The SX-99 was the next 'up' improvement (the X indicating
a crystal filter - allowed 'single signal' reception), and
the SX-100 was the 'cadillac' of the series. I have them
all. There was a limited edition SX-88 in the same
lineup, but was frightfully expensive (today they go for
over $1500, if you can find one).
But the S-85 is fun. If you get one, you'll most likely
like it as long as you don't expect too much! You can
see one at my web site at http://www.netcom.com/~nyet and
follow the links to 'About Me'.
Take care,
Dave WB7AWK
