A suggestion for those who are restoring non transformered sets is
to use an isolation transformer. After a few good shocks I learned to value
the safety these transformers give. Especially when evaluating the new prize
found at the local hamfest. As these transformers can be expensive I built
several of these units using surplus industrial control transformers. I
found some 24VAC 16A transformers at a hamfest for $5.00 each and connected
the secondary windings, using the primary winding for in and out. This
allowed 300 to 400 watt equipment to be run without warming the transformers
excessively. I mounted the transformers in a electrical enclosure with a
switch, socket and fuse. This simple device has saved me a few surprises my
50 year old heart can do without.
