Hmmm - you mentioned the 1958 catalogue... I graduated from
Springfield (Illinois) High School that year (going back for our
40 yr reunion next month), and at that time I was KN9KHU/K9KHU
(had Novice and Technician at the same time), and I vividly recall
making the pilgrimage to Allied Radio, 100 N. Western Ave, with
brother Ben (KN9KOM at that time) and friend ald classmate Bill
(then K9HJY, now SK...). and ther feeling of awe and wonder as we
entered the place. Now my memory may be playing tricks, reacting
to the feelings of the time...but it was BIG! Seemed to be about
a full square block, and crammed full of everything. Over at one
counter they had info and equipment for all the Knight Kit stuff;
they had shelves of all the lates, new Hammarlund, Hallicrafters,
Collins, National, etc., radios - in stock, and right there!

Then there was their used equipment section which seemed to
also go on forever and have everything. I don't recall that we
bought anything - that was not the reason for the trip - but
Jacob likened it to visiting Mecca... and that would certainly be
appropriate. Being that age, at that time in American companies
radios... A very special and wondrous place!

And that is the nice thing about memory - that is how I remember
it, a sort of visit to the Emerald City as it were...
