Spark plate

I'm teaching a class on radio repair, and a student asked, "What is a
spark plate as used on early car radios?" I've never heard of this term,
nor can I find a reference in any book I have.

Can someone enlighten me? What is it? What is it made from? What does it
do? How does it work?
