Lubrication Reccomendation?

I am working on a recently acquired Tempo 2020 pseudo-boatanchor. I would
be grateful to hear the wisdom of the group on the best way to clean and
relubricate the radio's drive shaft assemblies.

All but one feel and work pretty good as they are, but the preselector
shaft needs help. It turns, but there's more resistance than there ought to
be. The shaft is geared through a chain-drive arrangement to turn the
shafts on two variable caps.

My instinct is to find something to squirt on the places the shaft(s) pass
through the framework and where it is geared to the variable caps. But
there's a small voice warning me that setting off a lubricant bomb might
not be the wisest thing to do.

I'd appreciate any advice.
