Theremin instruments are indeed interesting. There were solid state
versions described in the popular electronics construction magazines
many years ago, but the originals, and (many claim) best sounding were
made with vacuum tubes.
I have a laser disk, "Theremin, An Electronic Odyssey," which shows some
of the original Theremins and has interviews with early Theremin
musicians. The disk is actually mostly a thriller movie about Prof. Leon
Theremin and depicts how he was kidnapped by Soviet agents and forced to
develop spy technology for Stalin's KGB. The laser disk is in 1.33:1
format as was the original 16mm film made for television. Far more
interesting than the "thriller" movie are the additionally included
interviews and sounds from old Theremins. The laser disk is CLV/CAV and
81 minutes long. It received "Two Thumbs Up" by Siskel & Ebert.
I can no longer find this laser disk on kencranes.com website so I
presume it is out of print.
Heh--if it uses vacuum tubes, it is a boatanchor!
