Dissassembly advice

I picked up some homebrewed used test gear at the Arizona State Surplus
Property dept. I have here some sort of resistance bridge/substitution
box. It has among other parts two very nice Helipot precision 10-turn
pots (testing within half a percent of marked value, 1K & 10K), and the
drives for same. Pretty good for $3, huh?

I am having trouble removing them from the steel box they are mounted
in. I can't get a wrench in to grab the nuts, or figure how to release
the mounting clips. Help!

P.S. this thing also had an old Eveready No. 763 22.5V battery. Very
cute brightly colored cardboard box with plastic thumbnuts. Any clue
what these were used for?
