National Gear Box

I've got one of the "straight" National gear boxes for
the PW dial.  It's in a WW-II target transmitter.
The PW dial side turns freely, but the capacitor side
turns erratically or not at all.  Can someone tell me
how this gear box works before I open it and
try to mend it?
