Similar is a difficult word here. They have common features but are
totally different radios. The R-392 is primarily a mobile radio that runs
on 24 Volts DC and matches up with the T-195 transmitter to form the GRC-19
radio station. It has the same frequency coverage as the R-390 and R-390A
but does not have mechanical filters like the R0390A does. It uses the
same type of linear tuning arrangement consisting of gears and cams that
move the slugs in and out of the coils thus varying the inductance rather
than the capacitance of the tuning circuits. This allows for linear tuning
across 1 Megacycle of spectrum. Both have odometer-type frequency readouts
and tuning characteristics. Both are modular in construction and both were
designed by Collins Radio Co in the 1950s. Both are built like a brick
outhouse!!!
Hope this helps!
