Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of James Millen.
W1HRX Special Event Operation

The James Millen Society (JMS) in cooperation with the Antique Wireless Association
(AWA) will operate W1HRX September 5 through September 8, 2001 in celebration of the
100th Anniversary of James Millen's birth. Millen's 1930's KW AM transmitter will be
used during the operation on 75M AM. This will be the first time that Millen's W1HRX
callsign has been used with his original transmitter since the late 1930's! In
addition, society and AWA members will be using other vintage Millen manufactured
equipment throughout this period on both AM and CW modes.

James Millen was a recognized consultant in the radio engineering field during his
college years and upon graduation joined the National Company. He lead National
toward establishing their leadership position in the radio business and was directly
involved with such successful receivers as the famous SW-3 regenerative and later FB-7
and HRO series superhet receivers. Throughout the 1930's he had established a strong
connection with important staff members at the ARRL and in many instances their
magazine QST was essentially put together at his Middleton, Massachusetts ham shack.
In 1939 Millen left National to form his own company the James Millen Manufacturing
Company. The Millen company went on to produce electronic components and equipment
for the amateur and commerical communications/test fields. Millen passed away in 1987.

This celebration will take place at the AWA's Electronic Communication Museum in
Bloomfield, NY during the upcoming AWA Annual Conference in nearby Rochester.
Operation updates will be posted at http://www.qsl.net/jms. Special QSL cards will be
available, business size SASE Required, for all confirmed contacts and SWL reports.
