The old "Q-Fiver" modification that was made in the
late 1940s and even into the early 1960s would work.
Basically, this consisted of coming off of the 455 KHz
i.f. into a BC453 command set receiver that covers the
455 KHz frequency.
There articles on this modification in many of the
amateur magazines of the 1940s, 1950s, and even 1960s.
You don't have to make any major modifications to the
main set and this is "authentic" in terms of boat
anchor history.
