Hammarlund HQ 180XE problem

Sounds like the IF may be going into oscillation and beating with the BFO. Check for poor grounds on the agc line caps etc. I don't know what they do in that receiver when switching to slow agc but I would start by looking at how the agc is slowed and see if that could be a feed back path if there is a bad cap.
Does the beat quite when the RF gain is turned down?
