Training wire antennas are fairly rare today, generally on some military
aircraft such as the E-6 (VLF) and E-2 Hawkeye. Fixed wires are used on
slower, prop type aircraft, where increased drag is not a consideration.

HF antennas on jet aircraft are often probe type or slot types that do not
cause additional drag. Wires are not practical. If you see and old 707
check the top of the vertical stab and you will see a probe extending
forward, this is an HF antenna.

Where do they keep the antenna on airplanes working HF? Is it trailed out
the back of the aircraft.

I never see an HF antenna on commercial jets parked on airport tarmacks.
