Hi Bob, Jim, Bob & everyone,
    Thanks to all for the responses.  I had no idea the things went so
dearly, tho' I suspect my friend had a good idea.  His daughter had told
him of one on ebay recently when it was at abt $50, and he was willing to
go a bit more, but it ended around $150.  He has one that he built, maybe
yrs ago, with a big loop antenna, and I think he has joined the crystal
set society.
    His interest, and the ad that was placed for him in our club
newsletter, has prompted the club to have a contest for building one,
results due at the next meeting, 1st Thurs. in Mar.  I've started fiddling
with one, but have a long way to go.  I had a pretty crude one back in the
50's when there were a few big BC stns with antennas in abt line of sight
range (W. Htfd, CT).  A survey of the 35 +- members at the meeting Thurs.
showed that only abt 6 of us had ever built one, and only 2 or 3 had heard
anything.  A google search shows that there's a lot of activity.
    Thanks again, I'll try to remember to post an update next month.
