why TRF?

The RAL Navy receivers are considered the best TRF receiver made. Some of us
military collectors still use them and they're indeed fun to use. First,
there is NO phase noise from any local oscillators/synthesizers. There are
no spurious mixing products from mixers. The overall listening experience is
very similar to listening to a direct-conversion receiver. The selectivity
is not as good as that of a well-designed superheterodyne with a choice of
filters.
The RAL has a great built-in audio filter, and with the regeneration control
set on the verge of oscillation, the sensitivity is perfectly adequate. The
stability is equal to the stability of the transmitter, as there is no local
oscillator.
SSB and CW sound crisp.

These receivers are nothing to sneeze at even today.
