DX-100 question

Well, John, I must say your question got me going on an entertaining 10 minute search of the internet. My first (and last) impression is that I certainly don't understand why anyone would put 866s in a DX-100. I guess the Johnson Valiant used 866s but they seem to be way overkill for the voltages and currents the DX-100 runs. Plus 866s are (if I am not mistaken) hard to get and most everyone tries to replace them with solid-state replacements. My general inclination would be to completely forgo the 866s and use some solid state diodes tucked underneath the chassis on the rectifier socket. Save the filament power and get a lot lower loss. 

It will be interesting to see what other folks have to say on the subject.

A previous owner replaced the high vacuum rectifiers with 866's.  Can anyone
tell me if this modification is commonly done and what its purpose might be?
