That was basically done with SSSC operation in the late 1930s and then after World War II. Of course SSSC is now called SSB. Even though it is possible to copy SSB with virtually any receiver that has a BFO the development of the product detector definitely was a positive factor in the use of SSB.

Perhaps an experimental NET could be started where HF-NBFM stations could communicate with one-another to test out some ideas?
In general the challenge has been both technical and practical, trying to get a decent signal from commonly available gear, and the absence of others using the mode on HF.
Might make for a fun new avenue of experimentation and a creative article series for QST!
