high power op

Hardly a 'little' bit of carrier! AM is with full carrier - at full 100% modulation (if my memory serves me right) the carrier is equal (in power) to the sum of the two audio sidebands. DSB, on the other hand, is generally considered to have the carrier fully suppressed (ideally) and practically some 30 to 40 dB down from the two sidebands. SSB is DSB with one of the two sidebands deleted entirely.

So the frequency spectral width of DSB is equal to the frequency spectral width of AM - you just don't have the carrier there. Which means you to have re-inject it in the receiver (just like SSB). Or, and this is a special characteristic of DSB, you can manipulate the two received sidebands and develope a local carrier to synchronously demodulate the DSB signal.

Isn't AM = DSB ... just with a little carrier?

:-)
