Modulation impact when amplifying a DSB signal?

In the 70's , I maintained an AM transmitter that had a low level ( 25 watt
transistorized exciter ) and that fed an AB1 ( or maybe A ) 4CX3000  
linear amp that
output 1KW Carrier/4KW peak.  It needed that 3000 watts of plate  
dissipation at 25-30%
efficiency.  A Gates Vanguard.
