Linear Question

1. The extra 300 watts won't be noticeable by the receiver in practice. It will increase your power bill in direct proportion.

2. One big glass tube with an orange anode looks better than four medium glass bottles with cherry anodes.

3. Need less spares inventory. Easier to bias a single tube stage. More reliable with a single bottle.

Easy for me to comment having seen neither amp, much less used them...

The 572B/T160L is a beefed up 811A - more massive anode, higher plate voltage rating. A good choice for replacing 811A in amps originally rated at 200W PEP per 811A if you wanted to keep the steam up for long periods.

Whatever you choose avoid "cheap" spare tubes. See http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/1165 etc for comment on modern 572B's

Subject: [BOATANCHORS-TEMPE] Linear Question

Hello Anchorites:

Just wanted to toss this question out there abt the Ameritron amps 80B and the 572.

With all things being equal, anybody have any experience with either of them?

Seems like the 80B is 1Kw with a 3-500 tube in it and for a couple of hundred more

you get the 1300 watt 572 with 4 each 572's.

Am I correct in assuming the 572's are 811's on steroids pushed a little harder?

Is it worth the extra money for the 300 watt difference between the two, or what?

Thanks guys,

Vic WA2ARQ
