[Boatanchors] UPS trashing - Requium

A few years back one of my athletes on the Special Olympic bike team I coach was chosen to compete in national competition in New Jersey. I let him use my carbon fiber bike to practice for and ride in competition. I borrowed a bike shipping case and sent the bike to Jersey. That went fine. On the trip back the bike disappeared in Mesquite Texas. I made several calls and initiated a lost item search and they could not find it. They said they had no idea what happened to it. That was until Special Olympics contacted them and initiated an insurance claim for $5500. They don’t give carbon bikes away. When faced with having to pay that they miraculously found the bike. It was in Denver in the unidentified box bin. It seems the label was ripped off the box in Mesquite. And, evidently all of the UPS employees in Mesquite are illiterate morons since people I borrowed the case from had their name AND number written on the case on every side of the case. Evidentially they could not read the number and if anyone could read it they were too stupid to call the number to ask where the crate is going.
It took a month but I did finally receive the bike and it was not destroyed!

In the case of a 75A4, which probably was a high dollar value claim, they have a department to try to recoup some value. In the case of $100 or $200 claims, it's possible that they don't want to try to dispose. Just speculating.
