[Boatanchors] Shipping damage

I avoid this problem by not shipping (or receiving) any unit weighing more
than about 30 pounds. Admittedly, this is easier for me than for many,
because I live in densely populated Southern California, with many millions
of people within a couple of hours drive and frequent and well attended swap
meets and flea markets so most items can be bought and sold fairly easily.

Many of our boatanchors are too heavy and delicate to be shipped safely
without wooden crates and specialized packaging, so I just won't do it!
When they were new, they were factory packed in specially built cartons.
Heavy kits, like Heath amps, sometimes had the transformers packed
separately. Other heavy kits, like the DX100, did not have heavy
transformers on the chassis when shipped, so less danger of shipping. Take
'em all to Dayton!

Yes, you pay a LOT for the convience of using a UPS store and other
shippers. Their mark-up is generally 30 to 50% over the UPS charges. It
didn't take me long to find that, out so I got my own UPS account and get a

rate even lower than what the UPS on-line calculator gives me. You can
print your own lables (prepaid) and then use the UPS store as a drop-off.
I've been doing that for quite a while.
