I must have misremembered reading that 12.3 was the continuation of 12.1T.

According to go/fn, I won't lose any features in going from js-12.1(5)T12 
to js-12.2(17a)...so that looks like a good way to go.  Plus, it'll fit in 
16mb cards making the upgrade easier.

BTW...everyone must be downloading IOS from cisco like mad.  I usually get 
several hundred KB/s, but today I'm getting 50-70KB/s.
