What are they using for the analog connection? ATA18x, FXS Port on
router, etc?

The CiscoVoIP List would be better able to help you, but it sounds like
a Codec problem. Most likely they are running G.729 rather then G.711.

I totally agree with you, but I would look like a prince to the customer

I could make this work for them. Their vendor has given up and probably
doesn't have a CCO or any agreement and doesn't want to shell out the
cash
for a TAC case to be opened.
