Hmmm, I never checked the hardware selector but it does load and run.
Perhaps your VIP2s aren't really -40s but only labeled that way?  I
vaguely recall the differentiating factor between the various VIP2s is the
amount of DRAM on the board.  If your SIMMs have been moved around those
may not really be -40s anymore.

I just loaded rsp-pv-mz.123-10a.bin and that's running also with IPv6.
Admittedly this particular router I'm using doesn't have much load on it
as it's just mainly used as a testbed.  But it does have 3 VIP2-40s
populated with 2 Fast Ethernet cards and a clear channel DS3 card.  Below
is a 'show hardware' from that box.
