Slots 1,2,4,5 have electrical connections on the back of the chassis,  
slot 3 is the N+1 protection slot.  Cisco has the new high density 
chassis which may have a different configuration.  Each slot can handle 
an OC-12 or an OC-48 depending on the XC card used in the chassis.  An 
XC or XC-VT is OC-48 core, OC-12 tributary.  An XC10G is OC-192 core, 
OC-48 tributary
