It's not MOSTLY marketing, it's *only* marketing. I've met several very
senior people in the Cisco ISBU (or ISPU..) team, and they've confirmed
that the difference between the 6509 NEBS and the 7609 is a stencil. I've
met people who were actually told by Cisco SEs that the 7600 had faster SSO
switchover due to a difference in the pins, which I was subsequently told
by the product specialists that this was a complete fallacy.
For the moment, the two platforms run identical code and identical
hardware. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE.
Getting kinda over this subject coming up over and over again, so here's a
joke to make me feel better:
Q: Why are pirates called pirates?

Wrong. At my previous employer we bought a number of 6509 boxes with
the NEBS chassis. Several of these were later converted to 7600 by
the addition of a 4 port GE-WAN card (ie. one OSM). So our conclusion
*at the time* was that a 7600 was a 6500 with Sup2/MSFC2/PFC2 and at
least one OSM.
Sup720 changes the picture, obviously. But as far as I can see the
difference between 6500 and 7600 is still mostly marketing.
