The Master Controller (MC) functionality is an IOS function and process,
just like the OER Border Router (BR) function. The MC functionality can be
configured on any of the router platforms we currently support (1700, 1800,
2600, 2800, 3640, 3660, 3700, 3800, 7200, 7301 NPE and 7500). As you
probably are aware, the MC can be configured on the same router as the BR
or on a separate router. Some customers dedicate a low-end router to be the
MC much like is done for an IP SLAs (aka SAA) shadow router.

In regards to the 2100 Master Controller Engine appliance, while its true
that it was EOL'ed this product actually got all of its capabilities from
IOS. OER MC code was and always has been developed on IOS and in this case
it was ported over to the appliance. The appliance then had the added
functionality of a GUI.

Regarding a GUI, we do have plans in the works but I'm not at liberty to
say at this point.

>Has anyone done this with 12.4 yet (yes I know, really new stuff)?

We released OER in 12.3(8)T and we just released 12.3(14)T and 12.4(2)
mainline. We do have some customers running that code.

>What kind of router is anyone using?

Most commonly customers run 7200s at their edge, however we're seeing other
platforms also.

>Anyone willing to share experiences with a particular platform or IOS
>release?

This question is best answered by someone judged to be impartial. A web
search turns up some commentary on this.

Further OER info is at www.cisco.com/go/oer Feedback, including
constructive criticism is very much welcome.

Thanks,
Paul
