I believe you're right on the port range limitation - I saw that referenced
on one of Cisco's 5500 to 5500 Etherchannel configurations. When I show port
capability, it does indicate it is restricted to the lowest ports on the
card:

switch1-c5500> (enable) show port capabilities
Model WS-X5201R
Port 4/1
Type 100BaseFX MM
Speed 100
Duplex half,full
Trunk encap type 802.1Q,ISL
Trunk mode on,off,desirable,auto,nonegotiate
Channel 4/1-2,4/1-4
...

Hmm. Perhaps there is a limitation:

switch1-c5500> (enable) set port channel 4/1,7/1 200
Illegal port_list range.
Failed to set port(s) 4/1,7/1.

but if I try:

switch1-c5500> (enable) set port channel 7/1,7/2 200
Port(s) 4/1 are moved to admin group 39.
Port(s) 7/1-2 are assigned to admin group 200.
switch1-c5500> (enable) 2005 May 10 13:53:01 %PAGP-5-PORTFROMSTP:Port 4/1
left bridge port 4/1
2005 May 10 13:53:02 %PAGP-5-PORTTOSTP:Port 4/1 joined bridge port 4/1
2005 May 10 13:53:02 %PAGP-5-PORTFROMSTP:Port 7/2 left bridge port 7/2
2005 May 10 13:53:02 %PAGP-5-PORTFROMSTP:Port 7/1 left bridge port 7/1
2005 May 10 13:53:02 %PAGP-5-PORTTOSTP:Port 7/1 joined bridge port 7/1

Still, show port channel shows nobody playing (though I don't have anything
plugged into 7/2 yet... ):

switch1-c5500> (enable) show port channel info
No ports channelling

I probably should have mentioned the version of CatOS.
WS-C5500 Software, Version McpSW: 5.5(18) NmpSW: 5.5(18)

Thanks again all...

Jamie
