You're talking about to different "WDS": The "WDS" mentioned in
Lawrence's mail is Wireless Domain Services, while your "WDS" is
Wireless Distribution System, which is a totally different beast.
WDS(Lawrence) has nothing to do with wireless distribution.

WDS(Lawrence) works fine with 802.1x
