[c-nsp] ONS Question

If you had a second pair of OC-12 cards you could beg/borrow/steal you
could potentially set up 1:1 span protection. Never tried it in practice
though so YMMV.

Wouldn't you take the hit even if you can put the card into another
slot?
You can't build a protection group once the circuit has been created, so
you'll have to tear down the existing circuit from the OC-12 and move it
to the OC-48.

Granted, if you can put in another card the downtime would be less on a
per-circuit basis because you won't take everyone out when the card is
swapped and thus have all your circuits down at the same time.

You'll have to take a hit to do the upgrade unless you can put the OC-48
into another slot.

On that note are your existing OC-12s in high speed slots, or do you
have XC10Gs and are planning to use OC-48 anyslots?

It isn't protected.
