We are using rancid for a few hundred devices, but for some i am too
paranoid, because i don`t want to store the password anywhere.  For
the same reason http and SNMP RW aren`t an option.

kron does it:

kron occurrence daily at 4:00 recurring
 policy-list save-config
!
kron policy-list save-config
 cli copy system:/running-config tftp://myhost/rtrX-confg

But it wont work without this:
